Literary Debate

Before i start, i would like to say that they article was so ridiculously confusing. In the article by George Will, Carol Lannone was opposed by the Modern Association was mainly because of her ideologies which were different. This was a major conflict in the article. It seems as if Mr. Well believes that literary works were influenced by political agendas and even feelings. As for Stephen Greenblatt, he believes people are translating words and meanings of things and putting them in their own words which is corrupting the actual meaning to where at a point our culture seems to slightly be pushed away. There are many writers  who publish the same thing but for us, we cant expand it because we all just write the same stuff over and over. Those who include their own life into their own writing which also cause our culture to drift away because their is nothing new being used. I would have to believe that both articles are telling the truth but then they are not. There are pieces of writing that include many different pieces of culture. To me, every piece of writing is based on a piece of culture but most of them are the same which is not helping much to expand the cultures. I also believe that some literary works are based on political influence but not all are.

  1. Yeah man, these articles were pretty confusing; therefore, making me read them more than once, which i was not happy with. I agree with you when you said "there are many writers who publish the same things but for us, we can't expand it because we all just write the same stuff over and over." How are we supposed to expand when we write the same things. But i disagree with you when you say that "those who include their own life into their own writing...cause our culture to drift away because nothing new is being used." In my opinion, i always felt that including our own personal lives in our writing helps reveal things about our distinct culture. Yeah it would be a bit biased, but it gives the reader a first hand view into that culture. Oh well, there was my two cents. Overall i thought you had good ideas and i liked them.

  2. Justin I agree that the articles were really confusing to read. I had to really read everything carefully. I didn’t catch that Will said that writer’s works were influenced by feelings. I guess in a way its true because the writers want to write about what they want. It’s how they feel about their own writing and they do not want any critics to judge them. I agree with what you’re saying about Greenblatt, how people are translating words that are changing the meaning of the text. People will not understand what the author was saying because there is another meaning that’s trying to overpower the deeper meaning. People who put themselves in their own writing are making people bored. I like how you stressed that in your comment. Just like I said in my essay, both are right in some ways but both are wrong in some ways too
